Community based Maintenance System in Drinking Water Sources

Community Based Maintenance System of drinking water sources was conceived and practised by the RKMLSP during 1991-92. This strategies has been appreciated by different agencies. Parishad installed 800 Hand Pumps in Medinipur and 120 Hand Pumps in Bankura, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas districts. The community took the responsibility of O&M of these Hand Pumps. A Water Users' Committee with 7 members has been formed for each hand pump and water users' families developed a chest fund contributing Rs.24.00 annually towards O&M of the hand pumps. Two trained village women volunteers are doing the maintenance job. This strategy influenced Medinipur Zilla Parishad to introduce Community based Maintenance System in the Hand Pumps installed by the Panchayats.
