Based Maintenance System of drinking water sources was
conceived and practised by the RKMLSP during 1991-92.
This strategies has been appreciated by different
agencies. Parishad installed 800 Hand Pumps in Medinipur
and 120 Hand Pumps in Bankura, South 24 Parganas and
North 24 Parganas districts. The community took the
responsibility of O&M of these Hand Pumps. A Water
Users' Committee with 7 members has been formed for each
hand pump and water users' families developed a chest
fund contributing Rs.24.00 annually towards O&M of the
hand pumps. Two trained village women volunteers are
doing the maintenance job. This strategy influenced
Medinipur Zilla Parishad to introduce Community based
Maintenance System in the Hand Pumps installed by the
Quality Monitoring & Surveillance Programme
The RKMLSP has taken up Water Quality Monitoring &
Surveillance (WQMS) activities as one of its integrated
development initiatives. As a part of WQMS programme,
the Parishad has established 17 Water Quality Testing
Laboratories including one Laboratory in the premises of
RKMLSP at Narendrapur with the support of Government of
West Bengal and UNICEF for testing of Arsenic, Fluoride
and other parameters of drinking water. 14 Labs are
working in Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts and 3
are in South 24 Parganas.
Development of Iron & Arsenic Removal Filter
In collaboration with UNICEF, a cost effective Iron &
Arsenic Removal Filter has been developed and social
marketing is being done through the Sanitary Mart
network in West Bengal. RKMLSP provide technical
training for production of filters and its components.
In collaboration with UNICEF and Purulia District
Administration of Purulia Zilla Parishad, RKMLSP has
initiated the project "Mobilising Community Action for
Nirmal Bangla with special focus in Purulia" from
December 2015. The basic objective of the project is to
enhance the capacity of the stakeholders for adopting
the Community Action for Total Sanitation (CATS) process
in achieving the ODF in the district. CATS process has
